Portugal Student Residence Permit Renewal: A Green / Amber / Red Triage for 2026
The practical question is not “Does my card expire soon?” It is “Am I still inside the legal basis for student residence?”
A student residence card can approach expiry in three very different situations.
One student is still enrolled and progressing normally. Another has finished the degree and is searching for work. A third stopped studying months ago and assumes the existing card can simply be renewed because it has not expired yet.
Those are not the same case.
Renewal is not an automatic extension of the plastic card. It is a new check that the residence basis still exists.
Portugal student residence permit renewal: The 30-second triage
| Status | Typical situation | What to do next |
|---|---|---|
| GREEN | Still enrolled, course continues, student basis intact. | Prepare a normal renewal file: current enrolment, accommodation, means, healthcare and any other AIMA evidence. |
| AMBER | Course completed or nearly completed; moving toward work or job search. | Do not assume student renewal is the right route. Check the post-study or work-based residence pathway. |
| RED | No longer studying and no clear alternative legal basis. | Get the status reviewed before expiry. A student renewal may not fit the facts. |
Green: you are still genuinely a student
AIMA’s current Article 91 page says the higher-education student residence permit is valid for three years and renewable for equal periods. If the programme is shorter, validity follows the programme duration.
For a normal renewal, the logic of the original student route remains: the student must still be enrolled, still have accommodation, still meet the financial framework or an applicable exemption, and still have qualifying healthcare coverage.
The exact digital/appointment channel can change. Use AIMA’s current renewal instructions rather than assuming the route used by another student last year is still the one in force.
What I would refresh before a normal renewal
A current enrolment certificate, not last year’s acceptance letter.
Current tuition-status evidence where applicable.
Current accommodation evidence reflecting where you actually live.
Current means-of-subsistence evidence or the applicable exemption.
Current SNS/health-insurance evidence.
Passport validity and the existing residence card.
If the address changed, use the actual current address. If the finances changed after a year of living costs, use updated evidence rather than recycling the original visa statements. For the accommodation layer, see the student accommodation guide.
Amber: the course is ending or already finished
This is where many students use the word “renewal” too casually. Students still arranging their first residence card should instead use the first student residence-permit guide.
Portugal’s current framework includes routes that can matter after study, including a period for some graduates to look for work or create a company and pathways into employment-based residence. The correct route depends on the level of study, timing and facts of the case.
If your course is ending, use Work During and After Study in Portugal before filing anything. That article separates student work rights from post-study residence options.
The key principle is simple: if the legal basis has changed, the administrative strategy may need to change too.
Red: you left the course or the student basis no longer matches reality
A student who stopped attending, withdrew, or otherwise no longer satisfies the basis of Article 91 should not assume that the remaining validity printed on the card creates a guaranteed renewal right.
The safer approach is to identify whether another lawful basis exists — employment, self-employment, family or another residence category — and deal with that before the existing status expires or becomes procedurally difficult.
This is one of the points where individual legal advice can be useful, because timing and procedural history matter.
What about AIMA renewal portals?
AIMA has used different renewal mechanisms over time, including online portals and procedural extensions for expiring documents. A temporary extension of document validity is not the same thing as approval of a new student residence period.
Always distinguish between:
a document being temporarily treated as valid;
an online renewal application being accepted for processing;
the underlying residence requirements being satisfied; and
a new card actually being granted.
For current procedural notices, check AIMA immediately before filing.
A renewal file is also a consistency test
After one or more years in Portugal, the state has more information about you than it had at visa stage. Your tax address, employment records, social-security position, university status and declared accommodation can now exist across several systems.
That makes internal consistency more important.
| Check | Question to ask |
|---|---|
| University | Does the current certificate show the programme and status you are relying on? |
| Address | Does your declared residence match the current housing evidence? |
| Work | If you work, are the employment/self-employment records coherent with your status? |
| Healthcare | Can you show the current SNS or insurance position? |
| Finances | Does the file show current means rather than historical visa-stage savings? |
Do not wait until the last week
Even where a digital process is available, document problems take time to solve. Universities can take days or weeks to issue certificates. Landlords may need to provide evidence. A passport may need renewal. A health-insurance declaration may need to be reissued.
Build the renewal folder before the card reaches its final days.
The decision to make before you click “renew”
Ask one question:
If AIMA ignored the expiry date printed on my card and looked only at my current life, would “higher-education student” still be the accurate legal description?
If yes, prepare the renewal evidence.
If the answer is “I graduated”, “I left the course”, “I am now working full time and no longer studying”, or “I am building a company”, do not force the facts into a student-renewal box. Check the route that now matches reality.
Post-study immigration routes are not student renewals
AIMA publishes a specific route under Article 122(1)(o) for qualifying former students of secondary education or first-cycle higher education who completed their studies and intend to work in Portugal.
AIMA’s Article 122(1)(p) route allows eligible second- or third-cycle graduates and researchers to use a maximum one-year period to look for work or create a business compatible with their qualifications.
AIMA created a specific contact-form procedure in February 2026 for certain former student-residence holders who did not complete the study plan, are working, and did not leave Portugal. The Article 122(1)(j) notice lists the required identity, tax, work, Social Security and accommodation evidence.
These are distinct residence procedures. Check the current AIMA guidance and the facts of your case before filing; a job or diploma does not by itself change immigration status.
