A Portuguese Bank Account Is Not Just “Passport + NIF”

What banks must identify, what they may ask for, and the low-cost account many newcomers miss

Portugal allows in-person and remote account opening, including for non-residents. Before banking, complete public-service identifiers such as the SNS user number; KYC then focuses on identity, address, occupation and source of funds. For the wider newcomer setup sequence around banking, identifiers and address evidence, use the first 30 days in Portugal checklist.

Newcomers often ask which Portuguese bank “opens accounts for foreigners”.

That question is too broad. Banco de Portugal’s rules start from a more useful point: banks opening a current account must identify the customer and verify the relevant information. The institution can also ask for additional information depending on the account and risk profile.

A bank account is a contract plus a KYC file. The easier you make both to understand, the less mysterious the onboarding feels.

open bank account Portugal foreigner: The regulatory minimum: what the bank needs to identify

Banco de Portugal’s current account-opening guidance lists the core data for natural persons.

InformationTypical evidence
Identity / photo / signature / date of birth / nationalityValid passport, residence permit or other accepted public ID
Tax numberPortuguese NIF or equivalent foreign tax number, supported by a document
Permanent residence addressPhysical/electronic address evidence
Tax domicile if differentSupporting document
Occupation and employer, if anySupporting document / customer declaration as required
Place of birth / other nationalitiesSupporting evidence where requested

What a foreigner should bring even when the bank does not list it on the first screen

  • Passport / valid identity document.

  • NIF allocation document.

  • Proof of permanent address and, if different, tax domicile.

  • Residence visa/card or evidence of immigration status where relevant to the bank’s onboarding.

  • Employment contract, payslips, business documents or other occupation evidence if requested.

  • Source-of-funds/source-of-income evidence for material incoming transfers.

  • Foreign tax identification where the bank requires it for tax-reporting purposes.

The bank can ask for more than the bare identity fields where due-diligence obligations justify it.

Can you open the account before you become resident?

Banco de Portugal’s guidance expressly recognises that current accounts can be opened by residents and non-residents, and account opening may take place in person or by distance communication.

That does not mean every Portuguese bank offers every onboarding channel to every nationality or residence situation. Product policy and risk appetite can differ by institution.

A refusal by one bank therefore does not prove that Portuguese law prohibits the account.

Remote onboarding exists — but the bank still has to verify you

Banco de Portugal permits several identification methods, including electronic document access and real-time videoconferencing under the applicable rules.

The bank may capture the identity document, use OTP verification and retain the required identification records.

Remote account opening is a regulated process, not a shortcut around documentation.

Compare the account before you compare the app

Before opening the account, the institution must provide pre-contractual information such as the standardised information sheet and the fee information document.

Banco de Portugal also runs a fee comparator for services linked to payment accounts.

A “free app” can still sit on top of a paid current-account package. Compare account-maintenance fees, card fees, transfers and other services you actually use.

The €5.37 account most newcomers never ask about

Portugal’s basic bank account / serviços mínimos bancários regime provides a package of essential current-account services at very low cost.

In 2026, the total annual charge cannot exceed 1% of IAS = €5.37.

The major access condition is that the person generally must not hold another current account, subject to the specific statutory exceptions.

  • Current account opening and maintenance.

  • Debit card.

  • ATM/homebanking/branch access.

  • Deposits, withdrawals, payments and direct debits.

  • Defined transfer services within the statutory package.

All credit institutions authorised to take public deposits and offering the relevant services must provide the basic-bank-account regime to eligible customers.

Standard account is not the same as basic bank account

Banco de Portugal also describes a standard account (conta base). It is a standardised commercial current-account package, but its maintenance fee and opening minimum are set freely by each institution.

It should not be confused with serviços mínimos bancários, where the annual cost is capped by law.

Deposits: know the €100,000 protection

Deposits are generally protected up to €100,000 per depositor per credit institution under the applicable Portuguese or home-state EU guarantee scheme.

That protection applies regardless of whether the depositor resides in Portugal.

Why banks ask about work and money

KYC/AML rules require institutions to understand customers and monitor the relationship. This is why a freelancer, a salaried employee and a founder may receive different follow-up questions. If the account is for a Portuguese company rather than for you personally, use the separate business bank-account guide because the onboarding file is different.

Answer the actual question with reliable evidence; a contract plus two statements may explain the income source. For lease payments, see rental deposits and advance rent.

The newcomer bank-opening pack

  1. Get/confirm your NIF.

  2. Prepare valid ID and address/tax-domicile evidence.

  3. Prepare occupation/income/source evidence appropriate to your situation.

  4. Check whether the bank accepts non-residents and remote onboarding for your case.

  5. Read the fee information document before signing.

  6. If you hold no other current account, ask whether serviços mínimos bancários suits you.

  7. Keep the signed account agreement and update the bank when address, ID or tax status changes.

The best bank for a newcomer is not necessarily the one with the fastest signup screen. It is the one whose account conditions, KYC process and costs fit the life you are actually setting up.
